BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 26, 2010)-The Morgan State Lady Bears, who began the season playing 15 of their first 16 games on the road including 14 straight, close out the season with their final three games in the confines of Hill Field House. Morgan State (14-11, 9-4 MEAC) begins its three-game home finale against the Spartans of Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. This will be the 23rd meeting between the two teams with Spartans holding a 13-9 advantage. However, Morgan State has won the last six.
Saturday's contest against Norfolk State will also mark the fifth meeting this season between Morgan State and an opponent from the Commonwealth State of Virginia. The Lady Bears currently hold a 1-3 record thus far against Virginia schools. The Lady Bears dropped their first three contests against Virginia Commonwealth (75-68) in double-overtime in the championship game of the Seton Hall Classic (Nov. 21), Richmond (63-60) in the consolation game of the Saint Peter's Holiday Classic (Dec. 30) and to conference foe Hampton (74-37), live on ESPNU (1/11), before defeating Norfolk State (70-55) in Norfolk (1/31).
The Lady Bears are coming off a tough, 66-64 loss at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday evening, ending the team's three-game winning streak. Corin Adams led the Lady Bears with a game-high 18 points and had a game-high six of Morgan State's 16 steals. Theresa Davis chipped in with 13 points and Kristina Rosario grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and added eight points, just missing out on a double-double.
Adams has paced the Lady Bears with a MEAC leading 19.1 points per contest. Adams, who is the school's all-time leader in points, steals and assists, also leads the MEAC in steals with 86 (3.3 spg). Davis is averaging 8.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, both which rank second on the team and Georgien Williams is contributing 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Rosario leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 per game (8th in MEAC) and has recorded a team-leading 29 blocks (3rd in MEAC) for the Lady Bears, who sit in third-place in the league standings.
Norfolk State (4-19, 0-13 MEAC) is coming off a 63-51 loss at home to South Carolina State on Monday. Whitney Long led the Spartans with 16 points, while Genor Dalton added 12 points and Batavia Owens scored 10. Dalton and Owens also added eight rebounds apiece to lead all players.
The Spartans have been led on the season by Long (10.6 ppg), while Raychele Payne and Marquilla Evans are contributing 7.7 and 7.6 points, respectively. Owens is the team's leading rebounder with 5.8 boards per game.
Morgan State will return to action on Monday, March 1, with a highly anticipated rematch against defending MEAC champions, North Carolina A&T. The Aggies won the first meeting this season, 67-56 in Greensboro, NC (2/1). Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at Hill Field House.
