UNC Greensboro 66, Morgan State 47
BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 1, 2010)-Amanda Leigh recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while Monique Floyd added 11 points to lead the University of North Carolina Greensboro to a 66-47 non-conference victory over host Morgan State in a rare 3 p.m. contest at Hill Field House on Wednesday.
With the win the visiting Spartans improved to 3-0 all-time against the Lady Bears and upped their record to 2-4 on the season, while Morgan State dropped to 4-3.
The 19-point loss ended Morgan's home court winning streak of seven consecutive games and was the worst home defeat for the Lady Bears, since an 18-point (82-64) loss to North Carolina A&T on Jan. 10, 2009. The 47 points scored by the Lady Bears was also the lowest scoring output at home by at Donald Beasley coached Morgan State team since a 42-40 win over Delaware State on Jan. 8, 2007.
UNCG broke a 7-7 tie by using a 25-9 run over the final 14:11 of the opening half to take a 32-16 lead at the intermission. The Spartans cushion would grow to as much as 31 points (51-20) just eight minutes into the second half, following a three-pointer by Brey Dorsett with 12:06 to play.
Morgan State was led by Brittany Dodson, who tallied a team-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Dodson also added a game-high six steals, giving her 112 for her career and moving her into 12th-place all-time at Morgan State. Whitney Southerland came off the bench to add 10 points in the loss. Fresh off her career-best all-around game of 16 points, 10 steals and nine rebounds against Northwestern State, Moneshia Davis tallied five steals, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists, but was held to just one point against the Spartans.
The visiting Spartans held a 49-27 advantage over Morgan State on the boards with 34 of them coming on the defensive end and had 14 assists to 12 by Morgan State. The Lady Bears however, forced 27 turnovers, while committing 17 and collected 16 steals, while UNCG finished with nine steals.
The Lady Bears begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this Saturday, Dec. 4 at home against crosstown rival Coppin State. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Hill Field House. Morgan State will then host Elon in a non-conference game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
