Morgan State 73, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 70
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (Nov. 12, 2010)-The Morgan State women's basketball team began the 2010-11 season without the services of the school's all-time leading scorer in Corin “Tiny” Adams and responded with a 73-70 victory over host Southern Illinois on Friday evening, in a non-conference game at Vadalabene Center.
The win was the Lady Bears' fourth season opening win in the last five years and evened their all-time record against the Ohio Valley Conference to 3-3.
Erin Hawkins scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting to lead five Lady Bears in double figures scoring, including four starters. Hawkins also tallied a game-high five assists and had a team-high three steals. DeKeisha Mathis came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Starters Brittany Dodson and Theresa Davis chipped in with 12 points, while Brittany Noel added 1o points. Davis led the way with a team-high seven rebounds.
Host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (SIUE) was led by Allyssa Decker, who came off the bench to score 12 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while fellow reserves Amanda Ledbetter and Jazmin Hill also scored 12 points apiece. Starter Sydney Stahlberg finished with 10 points and a game-high four steals.
The Lady Bears return to action on Sunday, Nov. 14, when they conclude their Midwest road swing with a non-conference game at Saint Louis. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. CT at Chaifetz Arena. The Billikens had their season opener spoiled by visiting Wisconsin, who defeated Saint Louis, 60-32.
