WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reggie Holmes scored a game-high 22 points and Morgan State snapped a two-game losing skid with a 90-58 victory over Howard on Saturday.
The Bears improved to 9-7 overall, 2-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and extended its winning streak against the Bison to seven straight games since 2007.
Holmes, one of the nation's leading scorers, made seven of his 16 shots from the field and 6-of-6 on free throws as the Bears 32-point win was its largest margin of victory since pounding Bethune-Cookman by 35-points (78-44) on Jan. 19, 2009. DeWayne Jackson scored 19 points with four rebounds. Ameer Ali added 12 points with five boards and Joe Davis had 11 points.
Calvin Thompson scored 16 points and nine rebounds to lead Howard (3-14, 1-1). Curtis White chipped in 14 points and Mike Phillips finished with 11 points.
Morgan State held a commanding 42-31 advantage on the glass and scored 54 of their 90 total points inside the paint. The Bear' bench also outscored Howard by a 38-2 margin.
Dadrian Collins hit a 3-pointer to help Howard trim the Bear's lead to 11-10 in the first four minutes. Morgan State responded when Jackson scored a layup that ignited a 10-2 run. Gene Johnson hit a jumper to give the Bears a 22-12 lead with 11:44 left in the first half.
Howard cut the lead to 30-23 when Curtis White nailed a 3-pointer with just under 7 minutes remaining in the half.
But Holmes and Jackson ignited another Morgan State burst as they combined for 10 points to help the Bears take a 45-30 halftime lead. The Bears never looked back.
The Bears shot a season-high 52.9 percent from the field (37-70 FG), while limiting Howard to 18-of-52 (34.6%) and 6-for-20 from 3-point territory.
Morgan State, the 2009 MEAC champion, will face its third conference test of the New Year when they match-up against Hampton (2-13) on Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center and will be televised by ESPNU. The game will mark the 60th match-up between the teams.
