Lady Bears Defeat Howard, 57-48; Improve to 2-0 in MEAC Play

Morgan State 57, Howard 48

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 9, 2010)-Corin Adams came off the bench and a team-high 23 points in the second half and Brittany Noel added 11 points, to lead visiting Morgan State to a 57-48 victory over Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Saturday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium.

Morgan State (5-8, 2-0 MEAC), which had lost a season-high five straight games, has now won its last two contests, while snapping Howard's two-game winning streak.

The Lady Bison (5-8, 1-1 MEAC) were led by Zykia Brown's team-high 23 points, while Saadia Doyle added 12 points in the loss.

Howard took a 13-9 lead on a layup by Portia Deterville with 9:33 left in the opening period. The Lady Bears then used a 12-0 run in part of a 19-2 run to close out the half and take a 28-15 lead at the break.

The guests scored the first four points to start the second half and extended their cushion to 17 points (32-15) their largest lead of the game. Twice Howard would pull within seven points, the last coming at 53-46, following a jumper by Doyle with 3:15 to play. But that would be as close as the Lady Bison would get, as Noel countered with a three-pointer on Morgan's next possession and put the Lady Bears up 56-46 to secure the victory.

Morgan State finished the game shooting 20-of-50 (40 percent) from the field, including 5-for-20 (25 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. The Lady Bears also connected on 12-of-20 from the charity stripe for 60 percent.

Howard, which was held to just four field goals in the first half, finished 17-for-61 (28 percent) for the game and was 3-for-14 (21 percent) from three-point range. The Lady Bison hit 11 of their 16 free throw attempts (68 percent). The Lady Bison out-rebounded Morgan State, 46-36 with Kara Smith grabbing a team-high nine boards for Howard.

Kristina Rosario pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and finished with four points on 2-for-2 shooting and had a block for the Lady Bears.

Morgan State will travel to Hampton, Va. to take on the Lady Pirates on Monday, Jan. 11 in an ESPNU contest at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
