Nievess Finishes 6th; Lady Bears Come in Fifth at Delaware State Invitational

DOVER, Del. (Oct. 2, 2009)-The Lady Bears' cross country team was back in action on Friday evening, following a week off, competing at the Delaware State Invitational 5k run. Freshman Ashlee Nievess placed sixth overall with a time of 20:28.72 to help Morgan State to a fifth-place finish.

 

Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), which claimed the first four spots, captured the team title with 21 points, while host Delaware State (53 points) placed second and crosstown rival Coppin State finished third with 85 points. Lincoln-Pa. came in fourth with 105 points, while Morgan State rounded out the five-team event with 109 points.

 

Tamica Thomas of UMES won the individual title in a time of 19:27.47 and was followed by fellow Lady Hawks Celia Whyte (19:27.78), Eunice Jones (19:28.47) and Cynthia Anais (19:39.28), respectively, to round out the top four. Morgan State's Vivian McCollum placed within the top 15, finishing 12th overall in a time of 21:44.84.

 

Morgan State will be off this upcoming weekend to celebrate homecoming, but will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, when it takes part in the Delaware Invitational hosted by the University of Delaware in Newark, Del.
