FAIRFAX, Va. (Jan. 12, 2009)-The Morgan State Bears track & field team competed this past weekend at the George Mason Father Diamond Track Invitational, where they started the year off right.

 

Darkari Taylor-Watson placed first in the long jump with a distance of 6.50m, while teammate Salifu Cham placed seventh with a distance of 6.18m. James Blocker with a height of 2.10m placed first in the high jump and Taylor-Watson placed second in the event with a jump of 1.90m.

 

Shot putter Anthony Napoleon came in second with a toss of 14.92m. Andre Simpson who ran in the 60 meter hurdles placed fourth with a time of 8.13. 

 

The Bears also had a good showing in the 60 meter dash, as four runners place within the top 10 in the event. Carbinere Whyte crossed the line in second with a time of 7.01, followed by Kevin Bowen, who placed third with a time of 7. 03 and teammate Stephen McLean placed fourth with a time of 7.04. Cham rounded out the top 10 with a time of 7.17, good for eighth place.

 

Bowen later captured the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.09, while Jordan Higgs (51.45) and Jude Obiarinze (51.61) placed second and third, respectively, in the 400 meter dash.

 

Other noteworthy performances came from Nathan Mesta, who placed fifth in the 3000 meter run in a time of 9:10:53 and the 4x400 relay team, which placed second with a time of  3:22:97.

 

Morgan State returns to action next Saturday, Jan. 17, when they travel to State College, Pa., to participate in the Penn State Open held at Ashenfelter track.
