Morgan Falls at Delaware State, 66-49; Winning Streak Ends at Seven

DOVER, Del. (March 1, 2008)-For much of Morgan State’s season-long seven-game winning streak, the Lady Bears found themselves trailing in the second half by double digits. But each time Morgan State would flip on the switch – find a way to force a few turnovers and score baskets, while holding their opponents scoreless for long periods of time and come away with the victory.

So, when the Lady Bears fell behind by 10 points (51-41) to Delaware State with under seven minutes remaining, it was just a matter of time before Morgan State would once again flip on the switch and pull out another come-from-behind victory.

Only this time that would not be the case, as Delaware State’s Katreem Palmer scored a game-high 20 points and Ashlee Burbage added 11, to lead the Hornets to a 66-49 victory over visiting Morgan State in a crucial Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

With the win, Delaware State (16-13, 11-4 MEAC), which has won three straight and 13 of the past 14 meetings over Morgan State, including this season’s series sweep, more importantly moved into sole possession of third-place in the league standings, while sending Morgan into a fourth-place tie with Maryland Eastern Shore, which was a 75-49 loser to Coppin State earlier in the day.

Morgan State (18-10, 10-5 MEAC) held its largest lead of the game at 14-7 and led 20-14, following two free throws by Theresa Davis with 8:54 remaining in the first half. The host Hornets used a 12-2 run to take a 26-20 advantage, following a basket by Racquel Collier, giving the guests a 26-22 lead, one they would not relinquish. Delaware State would hold a 33-29 lead at the break.

Corin Adams led Morgan with 13 points and Britney Griffin tallied a double-double with 11 rebounds and added 10 points for the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears will return home for the anticipated “East vs. West” season finale against crosstown rival Coppin State on Thursday, March 6, at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. It will also mark the final home game for seniors LaTonya Grady, Britney Griffin and Shalane Price.
