TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb. 16, 2008)-Slow starts are nothing new for the Morgan State women’s basketball team, of course not to the liking of head coach Donald Beasley. Matter of fact – slow stats are what the Lady Bears seem to be accustomed to.
So the constant stoppage of play during the first half of Saturday afternoon’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Florida A&M, due to a malfunction in the shot clock, played no effect on the Lady Bears getting into a flow.
Morgan State fell behind by as much as 13 point (21-8) in the first half, but bounced back by forcing turnovers with its defense and scoring easy transition baskets to gain a 55-51 MEAC victory over FAMU at Gaither Gymnasium.
Corin Adams finished with a team-high 18 points and Shalane Price added 11 points for the visiting Lady Bears, who dealt FAMU its third loss in its last four games.
With the victory, Morgan State (15-9, 7-4 MEAC) extended its winning streak to a season-tying four games and won just its fifth game over the Lady Rattlers in the series’ 36 meetings, while earning it second two-game winning steak over FAMU in the series.
Morgan State once again found themselves in an early hole, scoring just one field goal in the first five minutes of the game and trailing, 16-5 to the host Lady Rattlers with 10:52 remaining in the opening half.
Florida A&M (11-12, 2-9 MEAC) would lead by as much as 13 points (21-8) with 6:45 left in the first half, but little did the Lady Rattlers know, the visiting Lady Bears had them just where they wanted them.
Trailing by 10 points (25-15), Morgan State went on an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 26-25. Jasmine Sellers connected on a three-pointer to make it a three-point game at 25-22. Adams then grabbed a rebound and drove the length of the floor and laid it in, before Aaries Reed capped off the run by recording a steal at half court and getting a layup, giving the guests the one-point lead.
Morgan State would extend its lead to 31-28 on a layup by Theresa Davis with 12.2 on the clock, but the Lady Rattlers would get trey by Joslyne Jackson from the right elbow, tying the game up at 31 apiece at the intermission.
The guests led by as much as eight points (50-42) in the second half, before the Lady Rattlers used a 9-3 run over the next six minutes and pulled within 53-51, after Thyeis Halley hit a free throw to complete a three-point play with 59 seconds left.
Adams then closed out the game by hitting two free throws for Morgan State with 10.8 left for the game’s final score.
The Lady Bears close out their Florida road swing, as they take on Bethune-Cookman on Monday, Feb. 18, at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
