Jasmine Sellers scored a game- and career-high 17 points in the win over FAMU.
BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 19, 2008)-Reserve forward Jasmine Sellers came off the bench and scored a game- and career-high 17 points and Corin Adams added 11 points to lead the Lady Bears to a 60-48 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over visiting Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
With the win, Morgan State (9-6, 3-1 MEAC), improved to 3-0 at home this season and extended its home winning streak to six, dating back to last season. The Lady Bears’ 3-1 league record is their best start since in seven years, matching the 2000-01 squad’s start through four games.
Sellers, whose previous career high of 12 points came in Monday’s win at Norfolk State, had 12 points by the break.
Florida A&M (9-6, 1-3 MEAC) took an early 13-7 lead five minutes in the game, following a three-pointer by Thyeis Halley. Morgan would fight back and tie the game for the seventh time (24-24) on a free throw by Shalane Price with 3:18 remaining.
The hosts reclaimed the lead for good when Fendi Richardson connected on a three-pointer from the right baseline. Sellers then added three straight baskets from beyond the arc, as Morgan State closed out the first half on a 12-1 run to take a 36-25 halftime advantage.
The Lady Bears, who shot 13-of-32 from the field in the opening half, went 8-for-20 from three-point range, while visiting Florida A&M shot a combined 6-of-20 from the field and 2-for-4 from three-point range.
Sellers, which set a new career high (14 points) on a fast break layup with 12:07, then pulled up on the next possession at the right elbow and knocked down her career-high fifth three-pointer, extending Morgan’s cushion to 52-31, its largest of the game.
Joslyne Jackson led the Lady Rattlers with 13 points, while Q’Vaunda Curry added 11. Denise Tate and Halley had a team-high seven rebounds for FAMU.
Morgan State, which entered the contest ranked second in the nation in steals after averaging 14.2 steals per game, recorded 11 steals with Adams and Aaries Reed totaling three apiece.
The Lady Bears will travel down I-95 South to Washington, D.C., to take on Howard in a MEAC contest on Saturday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
