Lady Bears Swept Away By Red Storms' Three-Point Shooting, 97-56

QUEENS, N.Y.  (Dec. 30, 2007)-The St. John's women's basketball team set season highs in five categories and snapped its two-game losing skid with a 97-56 win over Morgan State on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.

With the win, the Red Storm improved to 9-4 overall on the season, while the Bears drop to 6-4.

The game was one of the best offensive showings for St. John's this season. The team set season highs with 97 points, 37 field goals made, 14 3-point field goals made, a 56.1 scoring average and 23 assists. In addition, the team set a program record with 14 3-pointers in the contest, surpassing the previous total of 12 set on Jan. 6, 2001. The 97 points scored by St. John's are the most points scored by the team since it posted 102 against UNC Asheville on Dec. 28, 1994.

Kia Wright could not be denied in the game, as she led the team with 26 points and posted her first 20-point scoring effort of the season. She shot 9-of-12 from the field and scored 16 points in the first half alone. The senior was perfect from the 3-point arc, going 6-for-6 to tie the single game record in 3-point field goal percentage (1.000), while tying for third in 3-pointers made. With her scoring performance, the Copiague, N.Y., native climbed into seventh place in the all-time scoring list with 1,296 points and moved into third place with 111 career 3-pointers made.

Monique McLean, Sky Lindsay and Kelly McManmon also had double-digit scoring games for the Red Storm. McLean chipped in 15 points, while Lindsay and McManmon each scored 13, respectively. On the defensive side, Joy McCorvey was the lone player to record double-digits in rebounds with 11.

From start to finish, the game was an offensive showcase for the Red Storm, who shot 56.1 percent from the field. The team's offense was potent and out-scored Morgan State 47-29 in the first half and 50-27 in the final stanza. St. John's capitalized on its effectiveness from long range, hitting 58.3 (14-of-24) from downtown compared to Morgan State's 20.0 (3-of-15) average.

While the offense was strong, the Red Storm defense played just as well, holding Morgan State to just 19-of-66 (28.8 percent). St. John's also took advantage of the Bears' 14 turnovers, scoring 25 points off of the miscues.

Morgan State was led by Corin Adams, who finished with 13 points, while Aaries Reed added a career-high 12 points and Brittany Dodson chipped in with 11. The Lady Bears, who entered the game leading the nation in steals, finished with nine. Reed had a game-high three steals, while Shalane Price recorded two steals.

Morgan State will continue its non-conference schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 2, when they travel to Easton, Pa., to take on Lafayette. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
