EMMITSBURG, Md. (Nov. 28, 2007)-Brittany Dodson scored a game-high 18 points and Corin Adams added 14, as visiting Morgan State held off Mount St. Mary’s, 58-53, in a non-conference game at Knott Arena on Wednesday night.
Morgan State (3-2), which picked up back-to-back wins for the first time this season, also earned its second straight victory over the Mountaineers, and now holds a 7-6 lead in the series.
The Mount, which fell to 1-4 on the season, trailed 54-44 with 2:16 left in the contest, when Lauren Howell responded with a trey just 11 seconds later. Tiffany Green would score six straight points for Mount St. Mary’s to cap off a 9-2 run and cut the Morgan State lead to 56-53 with six seconds remaining. But Dodson, who shot 10-of-14 from the free throw line, knocked down two straight to preserve the victory for the Lady Bears.
The seven day layoff for the Lady Bears was evident, as they never really got into a consistent flow. Morgan State, which never trailed in the game, held a 7-0 lead through the first five minutes, before the Mountaineers used a 13-6 run to tie the game at 13. The guests would respond with a 10-2 run, capped off with a three-pointer by Adams to put the Lady Bears ahead 23-15 with 5:08 remaining in the half. Morgan would hold a 28-23 lead at the break.
Morgan State, which came into the game scoring 40 or more points in the second half in its previous four games, scored 30 this time and tallied a season-high 28 turnovers. The Lady Bears, who also entered the game averaging 17.8 steals per game, were limited to a season-low 10 steals.
The Lady Bears shot 30.8 percent (16-of-52) for the game, while the Mount connected on 16-of-54 from the floor (29.6 percent). Morgan State’s bench, which has outscored all five of its opponents, outscored the Mountaineers, 25-12. Free throw shooting especially hurt Mount St. Mary’s, as it shot 9-of-20 in the second half and finished the game going 18-of-33 (54.5 percent). Morgan State finished the game shooting 69.4 percent (25-of-36).
Hassanah Oliver scored a team-high 12 points to lead Mount St. Mary’s and Green contributed 10 points, while Leah Westbrooks pulled down nine rebounds. Morgan State’s Tamara Rogers pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Adams, who fell shy of a double-double, added nine rebounds, three assists and two steals, before fouling out with 6:51 left in the game.
The Lady Bears return to action on Thursday, Dec. 6, when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on American in a non-conference game at Bender Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
