FARMVILLE, Va. (Nov. 17, 2007)-Corin Adams tied a career-high with 23 points and tallied six steals, while Tamara Rogers added a career-high 14 points at Longwood, but it wasn’t enough, as the Lancers held on for a 74-70 non-conference victory over Morgan State on the final day of the Longwood Classic.
For the second consecutive game the Lady Bears found themselves facing a double-digit deficit and staging a fierce comeback, only to fall four points short.
Morgan State (1-2), which trailed by as much as 19 points (50-31) in the second half, closed to within 70-63 with 2:15 left in part of a 32-20 run, but would get no closer. Two free throws by Phylicia Jones, again cut the deficit to seven points (74-67) with 20 seconds left, before Adams hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it a four-point loss.
The Lady Bears, who have scored 40 or more points in the second half in all three games, outscored Longwood, 41-36 in the second period. However, it was poor shooting which doomed the Lady Bears, as they shot just 25 percent from the floor (20-of-78), while host Longwood connected on 21-of-53 shots for 39 percent. Included in Morgan’s shooting woes, was a 6-for-30 output from behind the three-point arc.
Defensively the Lady Bears forced 27 turnovers, 17 of which were steals, with Adams recording a game-high six thefts. But Morgan State committed 15 turnovers themselves, many of which came at crucial times in the game. The Lady Bears’ starters outscored Longwood’s, 53-32, however, it was the Lancers’ bench which outscored Morgan, 42-17.
Cierra Baker led the Lancers (2-3) with 16 points, while Courtney Dyer and Odessa Williams added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Anna Steg grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Longwood.
Morgan State returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 21, when it welcomes North Carolina Central to Hill Field House for a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m. It will be the home-opener for the Lady Bears.
