PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Nov. 10, 2007)-Morgan State sophomore guard Corin Adams started off the 2007-08 campaign the way last season went, as the team’s leading scorer and rebounder. The 5-foot-6 Brooklyn, N.Y., native scored a career-high 23 points, including three treys, grabbed a team-high six rebounds and added three steals to lead visiting Morgan State to a 77-71 non-conference victory over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Saturday evening at the Hytche Center.

The win, which didn’t count toward the league standings, was the third straight over UMES and marked the Lady Bears first back-to-back season opening wins, since the 1982-83, 1983-84 seasons.

Adams was joined by newcomers, freshman guard Brittany Dodson and junior guard Tamara Rogers, who each chipped in with nine points, as the Lady Bears’ starting three-guard lineup accounted for 41 of the 52 points scored by their starters. Fellow guard Shalane Price came off the bench to score 10 points, to help Morgan’s bench outscore the Lady Hawks, 25-18.

While the Lady Bears (1-0) were led by their sophomore, it was the sophomore combination of Tiffany Reid and April McBride, which scored 21 and 20 points respectively, to lead the Lady Hawks (0-1). McBride pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Reid added seven.

Being that it was the season opener for both teams, play was sloppy, as the two teams combined for 51 turnovers, 30 of which came from UMES. Morgan State tallied 14 steals, with Rogers collecting a game-high five. The Lady Hawks had 11 steals, led by Casey Morton and Queenique Tyler with three apiece.

UMES controlled most of the first half, carrying a 34-32 lead into the locker room. The Lady Hawks led by as many as seven that period, taking a 19-12 advantage at the 7:17 mark on a jumper by McBride. The Lady Bears quickly tied it just two minutes later, as Price hit a jumper that capped off a 10-3 run by Morgan State and tied the score at 22 all.

In the second frame, the host Lady Hawks pushed their lead to five on a Reid three-pointer from the corner to open the scoring. Morgan State again tied it a minute and a half later at 37. All in all the two teams traded the lead 10 times. The Lady Bears were up as many as 10 points in the second half on three occassions, the first time coming at the 8:49 mark on a Tamara Rogers layup to make it a 62-52 game and the last at the 4:55 mark (68-58) on a Danielle Scott floater.

Maryland Eastern Shore got as close as four with 20 seconds to play on a layup by Brittany Adkins, but a pair of free throws by Price clinched the 77-71 win for Morgan State.

Morgan State will look for its first 2-0 start, since the 1984 season, when it returns to action on Friday, Nov. 16 vs. Campbell at 8 p.m. in the opener of the Longwood Tournament.
