Lady Bears Win Fourth Straight, Following 64-44 Victory At Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 15, 2007)-Shalane Price scored a game-high 13 points and Latricia Jones grabbed a game-tying 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Bears to a 64-44 victory over Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Echols Hall on Monday evening.

Morgan State’s victory was its fourth straight and ended an 11-game losing skid to the Spartans.

The visiting Lady Bears (8-6, 3-2 MEAC) out-rebounded Norfolk State, 54-44 for the game and forced 36 turnovers, which they converted to 24 points. Morgan also held advantages in second chance points, 16-10, as well as bench points, 29-17.

The Spartans (3-13, 2-4 MEAC), who have lost their last four games, were also hindered by poor free throw shooting, as they shot 48 percent (13-of-27) for the game.

Norfolk State got a three-point basket from Toia Johnson, giving the Spartans a 13-12 lead. However, Morgan received back-to-back treys by Dominisha Britton and Corin Adams, respectively, in the midst of an 8-0 run to take a 20-13 lead and held a 29-22 advantage at the intermission.

The Lady Bears opened up the second half on with a 15-9 spurt to take a 44-31 lead, following two free throws by Whitney Johnson with 12:46 remaining in the contest.

Norfolk State would close within eight points (48-40) on a jumper by Mo’Nique Redhead, but that would be as close as the hosts would come. The Lady Bears would respond with an 11-0 run and closed out the game outscoring Norfolk, 16-4.

Toia Johnson led Norfolk State with 12 points, while Areya Walker, Ashley Green and Tiffany Jenkins all added seven points. Walker tied Morgan’s Jones for high game honors with 11 rebounds.

Morgan State returns home to take on South Carolina State on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at Hill Field House.
