BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Sept. 9, 2006)-Jenna Henderson totaled 20 kills and 14 digs and Emily Hardinge also recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs to lead Bucknell to a 3-1 non-conference win over Morgan State on Saturday morning at Genovesi Center.

The loss was the Lady Bears first in the Terrier Classic, while Bucknell improved to 2-0. It was also the Bison’s third consecutive win over Morgan State after losing the first two meetings to start the series.

The Lady Bears (3-4) were led by Ivanti Bush, who recorded her fourth double-double with 11 digs and a team-high 16 kills, giving her 100 kills on the season. Jeniqua Moran fell short of her first double-double, finishing with 14 kills and nine digs. Esther Johnson collected a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. Her 10 kills gave her 1,077 for her career and moved her past former players Tasha Neal and head coach Ramona Riley-Bozier, who both tallied 1,075 kills, for seventh-place all-time at Morgan.

Morgan State jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the opening game and led 23-17 following back-to-back kills by Bush. The Bison fought back and used a 9-0 spurt of its own to gain control of the game at 26-23. Moran had back-to-back kills to even the game at 28-28, before Bucknell went on to steal a 30-28 victory.

Game 2 was a series of runs by both teams and in the end Morgan State again squandered a late lead and control, en route to a 30-27 loss. After trailing early on at 10-7, the Lady Bears wheeled off five consecutive points to take a 21-17 advantage only to watch Bucknell tie the score at 21. Morgan matched its largest lead of the game with a mini 4-0 run to take a 25-21 lead and led 26-22, before the Bison countered with seven unanswered points.

It was all Bucknell (5-5) early on in the third game and it appeared that the Bison were heading to another 3-0 win as they did against Niagara on the opening night of the tournament. However, the Lady Bears had a different plan. Morgan State fought off deficits of 11-5 and 17-8, before putting together a 14-1 run to go ahead 27-21 and win the game 30-24.

The fourth and final game was much like the third, as the Lady Bears fell behind early. Bucknell held a 16-4 lead and Morgan pulled within seven points twice, but this time the deficit was too large to overcome, as Bucknell won 30-22. The Bison collected 17 kills and hit .275 for the game, its best outing in the match.

Ashley Preston led the Lady Bears with 26 digs, while Camille Coleman (nine kills), O’Tasha Williams and Moran all finished with three blocks apiece. Jentri Fullove and Nicole Williams shared the duties at the setter position, finishing with 25 and 23 assists, respectively.

Morgan State returns to the court later this afternoon with a scheduled 1 p.m. match against Niagara.
