Lady Bears sweep Coppin; Wrap up No. 2 Seed in MEAC

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 7, 2006)-Jeniqua Moran and Ivanti Bush each tallied a match-high 14 kills and Esther Johnson added 10 kills to lead visiting Morgan State to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-19) victory over crosstown rival Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match on Tuesday evening at the Coppin Center.

With the win, the Lady Bears (19-8, 9-1 MEAC) closed out their conference slate on a four-match winning streak and will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s league tournament (Nov. 17-18), hosted by Hampton University. Morgan State also recorded its 37th consecutive victory over the Lady Eagles, and extended its winning streak over MEAC North Region teams to nine.

The Lady Bears’ Ashley Preston finished with a match-high 16 digs and Jentri Fullove chipped in with eight, to go along with her match-high 40 assists, two kills and four blocks. O’Tasha Williams, who notched seven kills, led Morgan in blocks with six to help MSU to a 9-6 advantage in blocks over the Lady Eagles.

Morgan State also held the advantage in hitting percentage, finishing the match with 49 kills for a .301 hitting percentage, while holding host Coppin State to a .127 hitting percentage with 36 kills. The Lady Bears also totaled 10 service aces to Coppin’s four. Moran and Preston had four aces apiece to lead the Lady Bears.

Coppin State (7-20, 3-6 MEAC) was led by Indira Laurencin 13 kills and four blocks, while Brittany Arvin added 12 kills. Grace Lyon finished with 28 assists and a team-high nine digs. Andrea McGant and Jasmine George finished with seven digs.

The Lady Bears return to action on Thursday, Nov. 9, when they travel to Princess Anne, Md., to take on the Lady Hawks of Maryland-Eastern Shore in a non-conference match at the Hytche Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
