Teneika Fellows totaled five of Morgan's season-high 16 aces in the win over Wagner.
BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 8, 2006)-Esther Johnson totaled a match-high 13 kills and Jeniqua Moran added nine, to lead Morgan State to a 3-0 (30-12, 30-20, 30-22) non-conference victory over visiting Wagner on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House.
With the win, the Lady Bears (10-6) extended their current winning streak to a season-best six matches and improved to 6-0 all-time against Wagner. Morgan State also improved to 4-0 this season at Hill Field House.
Morgan State used a 6-0 run behind the serve of Moran to increase its lead to 15-6 in the opening game and held a 21-9 advantage following a kill by Camille Coleman (5 kills, three blocks). MSU then closed out the match with a 9-3 run for the 30-12 victory, thus holding Wagner to 12 points, the lowest output by an opponent this season.
The Lady Bears finished the match with 41 kills on 88 attempts for a hitting percentage of .307, while Wagner totaled 22 kills on 73 attempts and committed 20 errors for a hitting percentage of .027. The Seahawks however held a 6-4 blocking advantage.
Teneika Fellows tied a career-high with five service aces, while Ivanti Bush and Moran added three aces apiece to help the Lady Bear record a season-high 16 aces. Freshman setter Nicole Williams collected 33 assists, along with four digs, an ace and a kill, while fellow freshman Alexandra Armstead notched her first collegiate kills, finishing with three.
Wagner (5-13), which was coming off a tough 2-3 loss at Coppin State earlier in the day, was led by Trish Morris, who finished with eight kills and seven digs, both team highs. Sarah Garrette and Jess Troiano each added four kills for the Seahawks.
Morgan State returns to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action on Monday, Oct. 9, when they host cross-town rival Coppin State at 7 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Lady Eagles enter the contest with a 3-13 record, 0-1 MEAC. Morgan State holds a 40-3 series lead and has won the past 35 matches against Coppin State.
