Esther Johnson tallied 11 digs and 19 digs in Tuesday's loss at Saint Francis-Pa.
LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 25, 2006)-Kristen Buter recorded a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 16 digs, while Anne Roosevelt added a double-double with 12 kills and 25 digs to lead host Saint Francis (Pa.) to a 3-1 (25-30, 28-30, 30-22, 28-30) non-conference victory over Morgan State.
The loss snapped the Lady Bears’ two match winning streak, as they fell to 16-8 overall and dropped to 2-2 this season against opponents from the Northeast Conference.
Juniors Esther Johnson (11 kills, 19 digs) and Jeniqua Moran (11 kills, 20 digs) led three Lady Bears, who recorded double-doubles, but it clearly wasn’t enough. Ivanti Bush added a double-double with 10 kills and a team- and career-high 25 digs. O’Tasha Williams also chipped in with 11 kills, while Camille Coleman added seven kills. Williams and Coleman also added four blocks apiece.
Morgan State, which dropped the first two matches, battled back and claimed the third game with a 30-22 victory. The Lady Bears used an 8-0 run to take a 19-8 advantage. However, the Red Flash (15-12) would not go away easy, as they answered back with a 5-0 run and a 4-0 run to pull within 21-17. Saint Francis would get as close as three points (23-20), before the Lady Bears closed out the game with a 7-2 spurt for the win.
Saint Francis (15-12) broke a 14-14 tie in Game 4, by using an 11-5 run to take a 25-19 advantage. The Lady Bears regrouped with an 8-3 run to pull within 27-28, following a block assist by Coleman and Williams. But the Red Flash stayed poised and held on for the 30-28 win.
Jamie Papini led all players with 30 digs, while Kayla Greenwalt added 10 kills and had a match-high five blocks for Saint Francis, which has won its last four matches.
Morgan State’s Nicole Williams finished with 47 assists and added a career-high three kills. Ashley Preston recorded 23 digs, while Teneika Fellows and Johnson each had a match-high three service aces.
The Lady Bears return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 31, as they host the Lady Bison of Howard in a non-conference match at Hill Field House. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
