Lady Bears Defeat S.C. State, Cap Off MEAC Round-Up With 4-1 Mark

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Oct. 15, 2006)—The Morgan State volleyball team closed out the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Round-Up with a 3-1 (30-15, 30-23, 32-34, 33-31) victory over host South Carolina State on Sunday morning at Smith-Hammond Middleton Memorial Center. With the win the Lady Bears finished the weekend with a 4-1 record.

Ivanti Bush recorded a double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 10 digs to lead five Lady Bears in double digits in kills. Esther Johnson, who played her best volleyball this season during the Round-Up, also notched a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. O'Tasha Williams recorded a career-high 12 kills, while Jeniqua Moran and Camille Coleman added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Jentri Fullove finished with a match-high 55 assists.

Morgan State (15-7, 6-1 MEAC) cruised to victories in the first two games with solid hitting percentages of .414 in the opening game and .316 in the second and a combined 33 kills, while holding the Lady Bulldogs to just 16 total kills and a .000 hitting percentage in both games. The Lady Bears, who were hindered by a total of 18 service aces, would drop a hard-fought 34-32 decision in Game 3, before claiming a two-point (33-31) win in the fourth and final game.

South Carolina State (12-14, 2-5 MEAC) was led by double-double performances from Monique Walker (11 kills, 15 digs) and Laura Waters-Brown (11 kills, 13 digs). Charlene Pama fell shy of a double-double with 35 assists and nine digs.

Morgan State will take a week off to enjoy its upcoming Homecoming festivities, before hosting Hampton on Sunday, Oct. 22 in a MEAC match at Hill Field House. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
