Ivanti Bush led Morgan with 16 kills in the win over Norfolk State on Friday.
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Oct. 13, 2006)—The Lady Bears began the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Round-Up on a good note, following their 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-19) victory over MEAC South foe, Norfolk State at South Carolina State’s Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Morgan State improved to 12-6 overall, 3-0 in the MEAC with the victory and extended its current winning streak to eight matches, while upping its overall mark to 14-0 over the Spartans.
Ivanti Bush led the Lady Bears with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .407, while Esther Johnson added 11 kills. Jeniqua Moran and O’Tasha Williams chipped in with eight and seven kills, respectively. Ashley Preston totaled 10 digs, giving her 1,441 kills for her career. Preston now needs 15 digs to surpass Jakaria Stewart (1,454) for the all-time career digs record at Morgan State.
Morgan State returned to the court for a 7 p.m. match up against last year's MEAC Tournament Runner-Up, North Carolina A&T, and defeated the Aggies in three games (30-25, 30-18, 30-26). The win ended a three match losing skid to N.C. A&T.
The Lady Bears (13-6, 4-0 MEAC) were led by Jeniqua Moran's match-high 17 kills, while Esther Johnson recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Ivanti Bush added eight kills and had 11 digs. Ashley Preston also finished with 11 digs, giving her 1,452 for her career, just three digs shy of the all-time record at Morgan.
Morgan State finished the match with a .162 hitting percentage, while the Aggies were held to .015 for the match. Both teams recorded 8.0 blocks.
North Carolina A&T (11-8, 3-2 MEAC) was led by Darlene Mitchell, who tallied 11 kills, five digs and three blocks, while her sister Arlene finished with six kills and nine digs. Lauren Walker led the Aggies wtih 13 digs.
The Lady Bears face Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 9 a.m., before facing five-time MEAC Champion Florida A&M at 3 p.m.
