EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Alonzo Coleman ran for 126 yards and two long touchdowns to lead Hampton to a 44-14 victory over Morgan State in the 35th annual New York Urban League Whitney Young Memorial Classic at Giants Stadium on Saturday.
Coleman, who received the game's most valuable player award, scored on runs of 42 and 32 yards as Hampton compiled 576 yards of total offense, including 349 yards rushing. The win marked the third straight year that Hampton defeated Morgan State in the annual game that raises funds for scholarships and educational programs for inner-city children.
Hampton (4-0) wasted little time in taking control of the game, scoring on the fourth play from scrimmage when Coleman darted off tackle for a 42-yard run just 1:38 into the game. They later increased their lead to 13-0 on two field goals from Andrew Paterini of 32 and 42 yards, the latter giving him a school record for career field goals.
Morgan State (1-3) eventually cut the lead to 20-7 midway through the second quarter on a 14-play, 83-yard drive, capped by a 26-yard pass from Byron Selby to Kelvin Dickens. The drive was kept alive by two fourth-down completions, including the scoring play.
Hampton, though, broke the game open by scoring on its first three possessions of the second half.
Princeton Shepherd -- who completed 9 of 15 passes for 186 yards -- threw his second touchdown of the day, a 38-yard strike to Dereck Faulkner, on Hampton's first play of the third quarter. Coleman later added his second scoring run and Paterini hit a 25-yard field goal, his third of the game.
