Bulldogged, Bears lose home opener

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Morgan State Bears (0-2, 0-0) returned home this week after a heart-wrenching loss at the hands of the Towson Tigers to face an opponent of the same color scheme (black and gold) on the same mission, winning. Bowie State (3-0, 1-0) succeeded behind its massive rushing effort from running back Isaac Redman and quarterback Lamar Manigo, avenging last year’s loss 35-21.

BSU's rushing attack had a vice-grip on the Morgan defense, allowing the Bulldogs to set the pace of the game on the ground. Redman shattered the BSU's single-game rushing record with 34 carries totaling 209 yards and three scores. Manigo also had big game, rushing nine times for 113 yards, averaging 12.9 yards per touch.

MSU quarterback Byron Selby showed some signs of development, connecting on 20 of 34 passes for 234 yards, but he was picked off three times. Two of those interceptions were returned to put the Bulldogs in Morgan territory, leading to quick scores.

In the fourth quarter, the Bears scored on a Jason Jackson 3-yard touchdown trot to bring Morgan within 14. The Bears’ defense played well, getting the Bulldog offense to punt after three plays, setting up Jai Wilson for a 48-yard punt return, starting a drive that resulted in the Bears turning the ball over on downs. Morgan would try their luck on two more times on fourth downs in the period; they led to an interception and turnover on downs respectively.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a drive that included 12 rushing plays and one pass, taking 7:50 off of the game clock. The drive would stall on a Bulldog fourth and three.

Saturday, September 17, in a battle of two teams searching for their first win, the Bears travel to Cleveland, OH to match up with the Savannah State University Tigers (0-2) in the Ohio Classic at Browns Stadium.
