Seedings Announced For 2005 MEAC Tennis Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. -South Carolina State University captured the top seeds for the men and women in the 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tennis Championships to be held at the Sanlando Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla., April 21-23. 

The Lady Bulldogs (19-1) will vie for their second MEAC title when they open the tournament on Thursday.

S.C  State, who won their only title in the first MEAC Tennis Championship in 1986, finished third in last year's championship. The Lady Bulldogs finished the 2005 regular season undefeated in MEAC play.

The SCSU men will look to repeat last year's spectacular victory in the
finals, capturing their fourth overall title in 2005 and their first since the 1986 season.  The Bulldogs (15-5) were undefeated in MEAC play this season.

The rest of the field on the men's side features last year's top seed Florida A&M seeded second. The Rattlers are followed by Howard, North Carolina A&T and Norfolk State respectively to round out the top five seeds.

On the women's side, defending champions Hampton is second, followed by
last year's runners-up Bethune-Cookman at third. Florida A&M has the fourth seed and Howard captured the fifth seed.

MEAC Tennis Championship play begins Thursday with seeds six through 11 on both sides at 8 a.m. The S.C. State women will open play on Thursday at Noon against the winner of the #7 N.C. A&T/#9 Coppin State match. The SCSU men will play at the same time against the #7 Bethune-Cookman/#9 Morgan State winner. An Award banquet will precede the championship on Wednesday evening to announce the 2005 All-MEAC honors.
