Box Score
The Morgan State Lady Bears turned the ball over a season high 42 times on Monday evening, and suffered a 77-57 defeat to the Hampton Lady Pirates in Hampton, VA.
MSU (2-14, 1-8 MEAC) had a tough time trying to stay with the 1st place team in the conference. The Lady Bears kept things relatively close for much of the first half, and crept to within 20-14 on a Whitney Johnson layup with 11:49 remaining in the half.
Hampton (9-9, 9-1 MEAC) would embark on a 20-2 run a few minutes later. The run was built on Hampton's uptempo style, defensive pressure and Morgan State turnovers. When the run was done, HU was sitting on a 44-16 lead.
The Lady Bears responded with a 10-0 run of their own to end the half. MSU kept Hampton scoreless for the final four minutes of the opening half, but trailed 44-26 at intermission.
In the 2nd half the Lady Bears would get no closer than 17 points of the Lady Pirates. Morgan State's turnover problems just would not allow any sustained run by the Blue & Orange.
Morgan State shot only 36% from the field, but did hit 50% of their 3-pointers. MSU was 6 of 12 from beyond the arc. The Lady Bears also won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Hampton 40-35.
Sarissa Gaskins led the way for Morgan State with 11 points. Latricia Jones was the top rebounder for Morgan with 8 boards.
Hampton placed four players in double figures. Rachel Butler and Sharema Dean contributed 15 points apiece. Jade Jones had an 11 point evening, and Monica Rogers poured in 10 points.
The Lady Bears return to action on Saturday, February 5, 2005 when they travel to Orangburg, SC to take on the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State. That game is scheduled to tip-off at 4:00p.m.
This will be the second meeting of the season for these two teams. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Morgan State 80-65 in a game played at Hill Field House in December.
