Orangeburg, S.C. -- South Carolina State RB DeShawn Baker accounted for four touchdowns and 181 yards of offense to lead the No. 17 ranked Bulldogs to an impressive 65-15 win over Morgan State during an ESPNU televised game in front of 10,993 fans on a chilly night in Orangeburg.
Baker came up just a yard shy of scoring his fifth touchdown of the day when he caught a 79 yard pass from sophomore QB Cleveland McCoy. Two plays later RB Troy McFadden took an off tackle handoff in for the score to help push the Dawgs lead to 20-0.
Playing in its season finale, MSU (2-9, 1-7) got on the scoreboard when QB Byron Selby connected with wideout Kelvin Dickens on a fade route in the endzone. James Meade’s extra point left the Bears trailing 27-7 at halftime.
Dickens led the Bears receiving corps with six catches for 82 yards, and wrapped up his collegiate career as Morgan's All-Time leader in receiving yards by recording 2,355 yards in his four years as a Bear.
SCSU came out in the second half and picked up where they left off. Senior gamebreaker Rondriekas Darby took a wide receiver screen 57 yards to help setup a 4-yard run by Baker, for his 4th touchdown of the night with 13:21 remaining in the third quarter.
McCoy recorded one of his most productive games of the season as he finished the night by completing 9-of-15 passes for 277 yards with a touchdown, and had 11 carries for 56 yards.
Selby, the MEAC’s leader in total offense and passing, was also productive and accurate as he completed 15-of-20 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown in the first half. The second half was a different story, as he was held to 8-of-23 passing and had a ball intercepted by Bulldog defensive back Kevin Corley, who proceeded to take it 27 yards for a score to increase the lead to 41-7 with 8:08 to g in the third.
MSU chipped into the lead when Selby engineered a 10 play, 82-yard drive and capped it with a 5-yard quarterback-keeper. The two-point conversion by RB Jason Jackson trimmed the Dawgs lead to 41-15.
The Bulldogs wasted little time responding. On its next possession, Darby scored on another jailbreak wide receiver screen, this time from 64 yards out. The Bulldogs held a commanding 48-15 advantage and a Selby fumble deep in Morgan territory helped set-up a 22-yard field goal by Stephen Grantham to increase the lead to 51-15 as the teams prepared for the fourth quarter.
The final two scores of the night came when Troy McFadden took a pitch and sauntered down the sideline into the endzone for a 34-yard touchdown (10:40), followed by an Antonio Gaffney 6-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 65-15 advantage.
McFadden was just as impressive as Baker as the sophomore tailback finished the contest with a game-high 118 yards and two touchdowns.
SCSU poured out 607 yards and gained 348 yards on the ground, while the Bears finished with 315 yards.
The loss marked head coach Donald Hill-Eley's worst defeat since a 77-24 loss against Maine in 2003. It was also the Bears largest defeat to SCSU since 1977 when Morgan fell 63-13 under coach Henry Lattimore.
