Bears Finish With Stinging Result, Fall To DSU 41-14

DOVER, Delaware (Oct. 22, 2005) -- Delaware State scored a touchdown with 39 seconds left in the first half in front of 4,616 fans attending the Hornet's Homecoming celebration on a cold, drizzly day at Alumni Stadium.

The visiting Bears were holding its own against DSU before momentum changed drastically as the Hornets cruised to a 41-14 victory. It was the most points scored by the Hornets this season, and it was the first time Morgan State had been defeated since Donald Hill-Eley became the Bears' head coach; Hill entered the game with a 3-0 record against the Hornets.

MSU (2-6, 1-4) was leading 14-7 following a 14-yard TD pass by Byron Selby to Jason Jackson in the first quarter (5:30), and a 3-yard plunge by tailback Craig Nelson early in the 2nd quarter (14:33).

But the Hornets responded midway through the 2nd quarter when a 6 play, 70-yard drive was capped by a 1-yard TD run by Rodney Roy. The extra point by Peter Gaertner tied the game at 14-14 with 4:55 remaining in the half.

Roy had a solid game for the Hornets as the senior finished with a game-high 139 yards on 28 carries with two TDs.

Delaware State's (5-3, 4-1) defense stiffened with under two minutes left in the half and forced MSU into three incomplete passes. On the ensuing play, Thomas Beese's punt was blocked by DSU defender Akeem Green and was recovered at the Hornet's 44 yard line.

The Hornets offense marched the ball down to MSU's 8-yard line with help from a pass interference penalty and a 23-yard pass to wideout Shaheer McBride. On 3rd and goal from the eight, QB Vashon Winton hit McBride on a fade route to help the Hornets extend to a 21-14 halftime cushion.

MSU had a hard time matching-up with McBride. The 6-3 wideout finished with six catches for a game-high 138 yards with two TDs. Winton also had one of the best games of his young career. The redshirt-freshman completed 11-of-18 passes for 227 yards and threw two TDs.

The Bears failed to recover, as they were held scoreless in the 2nd half, outscored 20-0.

The Bears running game was limited to a meager 30 yards. Byron Selby finished the game by completing 15-of-34 passes for 161 yards with a TD and an interception.

Sean Napper (5-40 yds) and Rodrick Wolfe (4-75 yds) led the receiving corps, while All-MEAC wideout Kelvin Dickens was double-teamed throughout the entire contest.

Defensively, All-MEAC safety Choo Choo Davis had another impressive performance as he collected a game-high 12 tackles (7 solo), 2 TFLs, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a sack. He also had two touchdown saving tackles.

The Hornets racked up 363 yards of offense, while the Bears finished with 191.

MSU will be back in action next Saturday when they host the Florida A&M Rattlers at Hughes Stadium for the Harlow Fullwood Classic & Youth Day. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
