Sophomore setter Junel Jeffries records 41 assists as Lady Bears defeat Troy State Saturday afternoon.
 The Morgan State University Lady Bears (1-4, 0-0 MEAC) secured their first win of the 2004 season Saturday afternoon when they defeated Troy State 3-1 (30-26,27-30,30-16,30-21) in the final match of the two-day University of New Orleans Labor Day Weekend Tournament.
The Lady Bears enjoyed their most productive and efficient offensive effort of the young season against Troy State. MSU hit .223 as a team and pounded out 54 kills. Mandisa Richardson led the way with 18 kills and 11 digs. Morgan got 15 kills from freshman Esther Johnson on their way to the victory. Ms. Johnson led the team with 13 digs. Meanwhile, Korrine Lewis had a big day at the serving line, handing out 5 service aces.
The Lady Bears had their best blocking match of the season. MSU had 17 total team blocks, and were led by Ashley Alexander who registered 2 block solos and 11 block assists.
MSU had a tought time in their earlier tournament matches. The Lady Bears were defeated on Friday, September 3rd by Southeastern Louisiana 3-0 (25-30,20-30,17-30). They also were beaten by Centenary on Friday night 3-0 (25-30,15-30,27-30).
In an early match on Saturday, the Lady Bears were beaten by the University of New Orleans 3-0 (18-30,18-30,15-30). New Orleans won the weekend tournament.
MSU's Esther Johnson was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Lady Bears return to action on Wednesday September 8, 2004 when they travel to Towson, MD to tangle with the Towson Tigers. The match is set to begin at 7:30PM.
