Freshman Ashley Preston led team with 16 digs as Lady Bears defeat Providence to win tournament title.

The Morgan State Lady Bears (6-8, 0-0 MEAC) punctuated a magnificient weekend in Providence, Rhode Island by defeating Providence College and capturing the Providence Friar Invitational Tournament Championship on Saturday.
The Lady Bears enjoyed an impressive weekend, winning all three of their matches to win the tournament title. MSU enjoyed wins over both Quinnipiac and Gardner-Webb, before topping off their tournament run with the win over Providence.
MSU freshman Esther Johnson was named tournament MVP, as she had 68 total kills and 54 total digs for the weekend. Sophomore Ashley Alexander was named to the All-Tournament team.
In the championship clinching match against Providence, MSU fought hard to win 3-1 (30-24,30-22,28-30,30-27). The big gun was Esther Johnson who registered 17 kills and 13 digs. Adria Boyd was a major contributor, giving the Lady Bears 16 kills and 10 digs. Freshman libero Ashley Preston led the way defensively with 16 digs.
Morgan State had strong blocking performances from several players. Korrine Lewis had 5 total blocks, as did Vashaye Ellegood. As a team MSU dominated the net, and that was a big reason for their win over Providence.
MSU also served well, as the Lady Bears pounded out 13 service aces. Junel Jeffries had 4 service aces to go along with her 44 assists.
Providence (2-8) was led by Kerry Schulz who had a total of 15 kills.
