Box Score
The Morgan State University Lady Bears (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) fell to the Layfayette Leopards 3-0 (24-30,31-33,28-30) in a match played in front of 279 fans at Hill Field House on the Morgan State campus Wednesday evening.
The Lady Bears fought hard all evening, and at times appeared to be on the verge of taking over the match, but in the end they could not get over the hump. Perhaps the turning point in the match came in the 2nd game when MSU built a 24-18 lead. That lead would not last as MSU saw Layfayette come back to take a 33-31 win.
Morgan State was led by freshman hitter Esther Johnson who pounded out 11 kills and collected 12 digs. Ms. Johnson also served-up 3 aces. Unfortunaetly the Lady Bears could not find offense elsewhere, and hit only .161 as a team.
Sophomore setter Junel Johnson had 32 assists and 12 digs for the night.
The Leopards of Layfayette were led by Veronica Canto-Ponce, who had a 21 kill performance on .333 hitting.
The Lady Bears return to action on Friday, September 3, 2004 when they tangle with Southeastern Louisiana and Centenary in the first day of the New Orleans Tournament.
The Lady Bears will return to Hill Field House on September 10-11, 2004 to host the Morgan State University Invitational Tournament.
