Earl Davis returns to Morgan State's football staff as the running backs coach.
BALTIMORE, MD -- The Morgan State Bears have named veteran coach Earl Davis as the team's running backs coach.
He replaces Michael Gunthrop, who worked as both the running backs coach and offensive coordinator. Gunthrop will take over coaching the offensive tackles and tight ends and will continue to handle his job as offensive coordinator.
“Davis is a no-nonsense disciplinarian,” said head caoch Donald Hill-Eley. “When you’re dealing with young backs that is exactly what you need.”
Davis has been the position coach for six of the top 10 rushers in MSU history including Alphonso Harris (2,086 yds), Ali Culpepper (1,681 yds) and Andre Thomas (1,424 yds).
The new running backs coach was formally the assistant coach of Morgan State under head coach Stanley Mitchell from 1999-2001 and has over 30 years of coaching experience and is very familiar with the league.
In returning to Morgan State, Davis will be the position coach for several young Bear talents; Christian Sweat, Isaiah Long, Craig Nelson and William DeShazo.
“I coached Michael Lynn (Offensive Line Coach) and worked alongside Hill when he was offensive coordinator for the Bears,” said Davis. “It feels great to be back in the program and I look forward to developing our talented running backs into a fundamentally sound group.”
