Kolet Bailey earns All-American honors for MSU Cheerleading squad.
The Morgan State University Cheerleaders added another trophy to their already crowded trophy case. The ladies performed spectacularly in earning their 2nd consecutive HBCU Grand Championship.
The competition was held in Nashville, TN on the campus of Tennessee State University on Saturday, March 20, 2004. The Historically Black Colleges in the competition included; Morgan State University, Tennessee State University's dance squad, Central State University's dance and cheer team, Texas Southern, Dillard University, Langston, and Alabama A&M.
MSU had a sensational weekend, as Kolet Bailey a freshman from Plesantville, NJ earned All-American honors. The other All-American nominees from MSU were Janesia Simmons and Dawn Hedgepeth. Additionally, Chrystal Battle was an All-American nominee but was unable to compete due to injury.
This is the second consecutive year that MSU has taken home the HBCU Grand Championship. Morgan State won the 2003 competition held in Durham, NC on the campus of North Carolina Central.
The Grand Championship is awarded to the squad from all categories with the best overall performance.
Coach Theresa Gibson says the atmosphere at the competition was tremendous. "All of the squads were supportive of each other. There was an overall feeling of respect and good sportsmanship throughout the competition." Gibson added, "I was very pleased with our performance. Our young ladies really stepped up and met the challenge."
MSU is coming off an impressive performance at the MEAC Championships in Richmond, VA on March 13, 2004. The squad successfully defended their sixth consecutive All-Girl Cheer title. They also finished just one point behind North Carolina A&T in the overall competition.
