MSU Makes Statement, Stuns No. 1 ‘Dawgs In OT

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior sharpshooter Sam Brand scored a career-high 28 points and scored nine points in overtime to help Morgan State pull off an 85-80 upset win over South Carolina State on Saturday night.

Christopher Grant forced overtime when he scored on a layup with 65 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 64-all. It was the 14th tie of the night.

Grant added 12 points for the Bears, who won despite the efforts of 2003 MEAC Player of the Year Thurman Zimmerman.

Zimmerman poured in a game-high 32 points and was nearly perfect from the stripe as he connected on 17-of-18 free throws. Brian Mason and Derick Davis chipped in 16 and 10 points respectively.

SCSU’s Shaun Wiggins nailed a three-pointer to cut MSU’s lead to 68-67 with to go in overtime, but they would get no closer. The Bears outplayed the ‘Dawgs down the stretch and converted 11-of-17 free throws in the extra session.

Morgan State (2-4, 1-0 MEAC) lost the battle on the boards (33-29), but had a good shooting night as they shot 51% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc.

SCSU (5-2, 0-1 MEAC) won the battle on the boards by outrebounding Morgan 33-29, but the Bears shot a blistering 51% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc.  

The Bears will be back in action when they travel to Lincoln to take on Nebraska on Monday (Dec. 6).
