HOUSTON - Morgan State ended its season on a high note last night with a 37-21 victory over Texas Southern at the Reliant Astrodome in a nonconference matchup.
The Bears end their season at 5-6 and with a lot of positives heading into next year. Leading 10-7 heading into the third quarter, Morgan State put the game out of reach by scoring 21 points to make it 31-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
"We made some adjustments at the half and came out in the third quarter and our young men executed," said coach Don Hill-Eley.
It looked as though it was going to be easy for Morgan State as it took the opening kickoff and went 65 yards on nine plays.
On the game's third play, quarterback Bradshaw Littlejohn hit Chris Cash for a 41-yard pass to set the Bears up at the Texas Southern 23-yard line.
After moving to the Tigers' 18, Morgan State faced a fourth-and-five in which Littlejohn scrambled for 10 yards to the 8-yard line. Littlejohn then hit Tommy Manus on the next play for an 8-yard touchdown with 10:57 left in the first quarter.
After both teams traded punts, the Tigers got first turnover of the game. Stacey Thomas stepped in front of a pass by Littlejohn and returned it 26 yards to give Texas Southern the ball at the Bears' 8. Quarterback Kevin Parsons called his own number on the next play to tie the game heading into the second quarter.
The Bears retook the lead late in the second quarter by moving 63 yards on eight plays with Nathan Keever capping it off with a 20-yard field goal and a 10-7 lead heading into the half.
That's when Morgan State got going. It started with a Bryan Wilson fumble recovery off the second-half kickoff as Ramond Gilmore lost the ball and Wilson recovered, it giving the Bears the ball at the Tigers' 26. Littlejohn scored from the 1 a few plays later to extend the lead to 17-7.
The Tigers made it 17-13 as John James got outside for a 37-yard touchdown run with 8:25 left in the third quarter.
"That's when we said enough and started to take it to them," Littlejohn said.
Jason Jackson rushed for a game-high 224 yards on 30 carries, including a 47-yard touchdown run.
Morgan State was not done in the third quarter as Jackson was at it again, but this time he was on the receiving end of a 51-yard touchdown pass from Littlejohn to make it 31-13 heading into the final quarter.
Jackson would add another touchdown run, this time from 2 yards to make it 37-13 with 8:45 left.
