Tiffany Oliver Pounds Out Career High 20 Kills vs. Rider University
Box Score
The Morgan State University Lady Bears (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) were involved in a knock down-drag out affair in their first volleyball match of the 2003 season. However, when the dust settled MSU suffered a tough setback to the Rider University Broncs 3-2 (21-30, 30-28, 19-30, 30-20,15-17).
The match was the first taste of competition of the season for Morgan State and was the first of four matches they will play at the La Salle University Invitational at the Tom Gola Arena in Philadelphia, PA.
The lost was difficult because MSU out hit and out blocked Rider. However, the Lady Bears hurt themselves at the serving line. MSU missed 20 serves for the match, and those missed serves proved to be decisive in the Rider victory.
Despite the defeat MSU senior middle blocker Tiffany Oliver (Merced, California/Golden Valley) had a career high 20 kill performance against the Broncs. Ms. Oliver was also dominant at the net, as she led the team with seven total blocks. She rounded out a great performance with 11 digs on the day.
Senior Tasha Neal (Phoenix, Arizona/St. Mary's) also enjoyed a double/double. Neal had 14 kills and 13 digs for the "Lady Bear" cause. Freshman Ashley Alexander (Austin, Texas/McNeil) had a productive day in her first match in a Morgan State uniform. Alexander had 11 kills and led the team with a .611 hitting percentage. Fellow freshman Whitney Chatman (Davenport, Iowa/North) also had a productive effort in her first match for MSU, as she collected a team high 15 digs.
Junel Jeffries (Owings, MD/Northern HS) collected 38 assists and 8 digs in her first collegiate match.
