The Morgan State University Lady Bears (0-7, 0-1 MEAC) had a tough time in the opening round of the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Invitational. MSU fell to tournament host Georgia State 80-44 in a game played on the Georgia State campus Saturday afternoon.
The game was part of a two day tournament featuring Morgan State, Georgia State, Savannah State and Alabama A&M.
Morgan State will play in the consolation game on Sunday afternoon (2:00p.m.) against the Lady Tigers of Savannah State. The Lady Tigers were defeated by Alabama A&M 71-53 in the other tournament game of the day.
Defense was a problem for the Lady Bears all afternoon, as the Lady Panthers shot 52% from the field. Georgia State had a balanced scoring attack, placing 5 players in double figures.
Morgan State had problems on the boards. The Lady Bears were out-rebounded 41-26 by Georgia State.
MSU got off to a slow start and never really got going on offense. Georgia State took a 38-16 lead into the locker room at intermission and never looked back.
The Lady Bears were led by New Jersey freshman Sarissa Gaskins who scored a career and season high 12 points for the Lady Bears. Ms. Gaskins was the only player for MSU in double figures.
Senior Erinn Coleman had a 9 point day for MSU.
The Lady Bears will look for their first win of the season in the consolation match-up on Sunday afternoon vs. Savannah State (1-9).
After the tournament, MSU will return home for their first taste of homecooking in the 2003/04 season. The Lady Bears will have their home opener on Monday, December 22, 2003 against the Towson University Tigers.
The Morgan State/Towson game will tipoff at 7:00p.m. @ Hill Field House on the Morgan State campus.
The Lady Bears lone win last season came against Towson @ the Towson Center on December 21, 2003.
