Erinn Coleman leads Lady Bears with 12 points vs. Marshall

The Morgan State University Lady Bears (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) got off to a tough start to their 2003/04 hoop season. The Lady Bears were defeated 88-34 by Marshall University in the first day of a tournament hosted by the Thundering Herd.
MSU started slow, as they were out-scored 30-3, and never seriously threatened in the contest. The Lady Bears were victimized by 36 turnovers, and shot only 23% from the field. MSU shot only 14% in the 2nd half.
Morgan State was dominated on the boards, as Marshall out-rebounded Morgan 58-31.
The only Lady Bear in double figures was Erinn Coleman (Sacramento, CA/Sheldon HS), who scored 12 points on 5 of 12 shooting from the field. The Lady Bears converted only 10 field goals for the game, with Coleman making 5 of them. No other Lady Bear made more than one field goal.
Morgan State was down 48-18 at the half, and Marshall added to their cushion throughout the 2nd half.
MSU sophomore Jennyffer Vargas (Miami, FL/Miami Jackson) blocked a team high 5 shots and grabbed 5 rebounds. Vargas led the MEAC in blocked shots as a freshman. Freshman Sarissa Gaskins (Wayne, NJ/Passiac Institute) had an active game in her first collegiate competition. Gaskins scored 6 points, had 3 steals, and hit 3 of her 4 free throws in the contest.
Morgan State will return to the floor on Saturday, as they will play in the Consolation Game of the Marshall Tournament against the Racers of Murray State.
