READING, Pa. (Jan. 21, 2018)-The Lady Bears bowling team got off to a slow start in the 10th annual Kutztown Invitational, but in the end Morgan State put together a 3-0 day on the third and final day on Sunday. Morgan State would finish the tournament with a 5-7 overall mark and placed 23rd out of 27 teams.
The Lady Bears entered Sunday's championship bracket sitting in 26th-place. Morgan State first faced Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Howard in the best-of-seven match and won, 4-2. The Lady Bears then faced Chestnut Hill and earned a 4-1 victory. The Lady Bears advanced to face Medaille in their final match to place 23rd and the two teams would need an extra frame, as both teams each won three and then tied 166-166 in the seventh. Morgan State would then defeat Medaille, 90-85 for the win.
Saturday, the Morgan State concluded Day 2 of the Kutztown Invitational winning two of the five traditional games played.
Morgan State's two wins on Saturday helped the Lady Bears improve to 2-7 through two days of the invitational, after going 0-4 on the opening day.
The Lady Bears began Saturday's traditional games with a six-pin victory over Monmouth, 905-899. Morgan State then dropped three straight matches against fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Norfolk State (1,015-910), Wisconsin-Whitewater (895-871) and Alabama-Birmingham (965-941). The team wrapped up the day defeating Medaille, 877-847.
On Friday, the Lady Bears had a rough start to the weekend, as they dropped all four contests. Morgan State faced Arkansas State and lost 1,042-868 and then lost to No. 4 Vanderbilt by a score of 1,153-897. The Lady Bears then dropped decisions to Sam Houston State (1,084-862) and Youngstown State (939-831).
Ashley Porter led the Lady Bears with an average of 184.2 pins after knocking down a total of 921 pins. Porter had a high of 224 against Norfolk State.
