Men's Basketball Announces 2017-18 Non-Conference Schedule

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Morgan State men's basketball team has released its non-conference schedule for the 2017-18 season.
 
The year will open on the road with matchups at Binghamton Nov. 10 and South Florida on Nov. 13. Lincoln will visit Hill Field House for the Bears' home-opener on Nov. 16.
 
Morgan State will tip-off at West Virginia Nov. 18, before returning to host Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 21. The Bears close out the 2017 calendar with eight straight road games starting with Mount St. Mary's Nov. 27 and George Washington Nov. 29.
 
Morgan State will open the month of December with a date at Navy on Dec. 3, followed by matchups at Towson Dec. 6, at Manhattan Dec. 9, and at George Mason Dec. 22. The Bears will wrap the non-conference schedule with a west coast swing to face Grand Canyon on Dec. 27 in Las Vegas, followed by a contest at California State, Northridge Dec. 30.
 
Some more notes of the Bears' 2017-18 non-conference opponents:

Binghamton: Went 12-20 and 3-13 in conference play under head coach Tommy Dempsey … Fell to No. 2 seed Stony Brook in the American East Tournament quarterfinals … It will mark the first meeting between the schools.

South Florida: Finished the 2016-17 season with an 8-23 record, including a 1-16 mark in conference play … South Florida, a member of the American Athletic Conference,  begins the new season with new head coach Brian Gregory at the helm … The game will be the second matchup between the schools since Jan. 3, 2000. The Bears fell to USF by a score of 91-53 … The Bulls added 7-foot-2, 250-pound JuCo National Champion, Nikola Scekic. Scekic is a native of Belgrade, Serbia and played JuCo at Hutchinson CC (Kan.).

Lincoln: Finished the 2016-17 season with a 7-20 record, including a 5-12 mark in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play … The game will be the 34th matchup between the schools since the 1950-51 season. The Bears have won the last five matchups since the 1982-83 season, including an 86-68 win in the last matchup (1989-90) … The CIAA is an NCAA Division II Conference composed of 12 institutions.
 
West Virginia: Finished the 2016-17 season with a 28-9 record, including a 12-6 mark in Big 12 play … WVU lost to Gonzaga (61-58) in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen … WVU finished No. 8 in the final Associated Press poll and made its seventh NCAA appearance in the last nine years and ninth appearance in the last 12 seasons … The game will be the third matchup between the schools. The Mountaineers have won both matchups (1996 and 2010) … Head coach Bob Huggins is in ninth place all-time on the NCAA Division I winningest coaches list.

Goldey-Beacom: Posted a 20-7 record a season ago and finished with a 14-5 conference record during Coach Dekmar's first year as Goldey-Beacom's head coach … The Lightning finished T-2nd in the CACC South Division and was defeated by Dominican (N.Y.) in the CACC Tournament quarterfinals … Morgan State leads the series 1-0 … Goldey-Beacom guard Isaiah Graves will be facing his old team when he returns to Hill Field House -- The New Jersey native played in the Bears' backcourt a season ago.

Mount St. Mary's: Posted a 20-16 record a season ago and defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) to capture the Northeast Conference Championship … The Mount was defeated by Villanova in the NCAA Tournament … Morgan State fell 85-79 in double-overtime in the last matchup with Mount St. Mary's on Dec. 7, 1983 … The Mount lead the series 6-1.

George Washington: Posted a 20-15 overall record and went 10-8 in conference play before losing to Richmond in the A-10 Tournament Championship … The Colonials advanced to the CBI Quarterfinals where they fell at UIC (80-71) … Pops Mensah-Bonsu had 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks, and teammate Danilo Pinnock scored a game-high 23 points to help No. 19 George Washington defeat Morgan State, 102-75, on Dec. 10, 2005 -- Joseph McLean led the Bears with 15 points ... on Nov. 21 … GW leads the series 3-0.

Naval Academy: Posted a 16-16 overall record and went 10-8 in conference play … The Midshipmen fell to Bucknell (70-65) in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament … Navy used a 20-2 scoring barrage to help them cruise to a 73-47 victory in their first visit to Hill Field House on Dec. 8, 2005 – Timothy Mathis was the only Bear to finish in double-figures for the Bears by posting 11 points … The Midshipmen lead the series 2-0.

Towson: Posted a 20-12 overall record and posted an 11-7 conference record a season ago … The Tigers suffered a 67-59 defeat to the College of Charleston in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament ... William Adala Moto scored seven of his 19 points in the final 3:49 as Towson spoiled the home opener for Morgan State, 78-72, on Nov. 15, 2016 --Tiwian Kendley scored a game-high 26 points (11-12 FTs) to lead the Bears … The Tigers lead the series 15-13 since the 1967-68 season and have won the last four meetings against the Bears.

Manhattan: Finished the 2016-17 season with a 10-22 record and went 5-15 in the MAC … Zavier Turner's apparent game-winning shot was ruled to have come after the final buzzer as No. 6 Rider edged past No. 11 Manhattan by a 69-68 count in the First Round of the MAAC Tournament … Tiwian Kendley scored season highs with 40 points and 10 rebounds, Stanley Davis hit a go-ahead free throw in overtime and Morgan State hung on to beat Manhattan 85-82 in double-overtime on Dec. 6, 2016 ... This season will mark the sixth meeting between the teams and the Jaspers lead the series 3-2 since 2008.

George Mason: Finished the 2016-17 season with a 20-14 record and went 9-9 in conference play … The Patriots lost to VCU, 71-60, in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament inside PPG Paints Arena on March 10, 2017 ... George Mason lost to Loyola (Md.) by the score of 73-58 in the First Round of the CBI Tournament … Morgan State fell at George Mason by a score of 85-82 on January 2, 1994 ... The Patriots lead the series 2-1.

Grand Canyon: Finished the 2016-17 season with a 22-9 record, including an 11-3 Western Athletic Conference mark … Grand Canyon completed the regular season by winning their last seven games, but were not eligible to participate in the WAC Basketball Tournament … It will mark the first meeting between the schools.

California State, Northridge: Posted a 10-20 record and was 5-11 in the Big West Conference … Lost in triple overtime by a score of 87-83 to UC Davis at The Matadome … Kendall Smith scored 19 points and Cal State Northridge posted an 82-61 win over Morgan State on Dec. 30, 2016 at The Matadome -- Phillip Carr led the Bears with a career-high 25 points on 8-of-20 shooting and hauled down 11 rebounds with two blocked shots … CSUN holds a 4-0 record against Morgan State in school history.
