Lady Bears Defeat Delaware State For Fifth Straight Win, 71-52

Box Score DOVER, Del. (Feb. 20, 2017)-Braennan Farrar and Tykyrah Williams each scored a game-high 16 points and Chelsea Mitchell added 14 points as the Lady Bears pulled away for their fifth straight win, following a 71-52 victory over Delaware State on Monday evening at Memorial Hall.

The five-game winning streak is the most since last year, when the Lady Bears also won five straight.

The game was the second between the two teams in a span of nine days. With the Lady Bears sweeping the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) season series, Morgan State has now won five straight over the Lady Hornets and improved to 35-40 all-time against Delaware State.

Along with keeping their winning streak intact, the victory also had special meaning for Morgan State coach Ed Davis, who after patrolling the sidelines of the Hornet's Nest for 12 seasons, was making his first trip back as an opposing head coach and fourth with Morgan State since joining Morgan State in 2012 as an assistant coach. Davis and Morgan State have yet to lose in four attempts at Memorial Hall.

Morgan State (7-19, 5-8 MEAC) held a 46-28 rebounding advantage over Delaware State. Mitchell pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to fall short of a double-double. Zuri White also grabbed nine rebounds for game-high honors and Williams finished with seven rebounds.

The Lady Bears continue to turn up the defensive pressure, as they forced 26 Delaware State turnovers, 18 of which were steals. In fact it was Morgan State's defense that allowed the squad to pull away from the host Hornets in the fourth quarter.

Clinging to a 44-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter, Morgan State used a 27-9 run in the quarter to secure the victory. Braennan Farrar began the fourth with a three-pointer to give the guests a 47-43 lead just 15 seconds into the quarter and trigger a 20-5 run over nearly a seven-minute span. White scored on a layup to give Morgan a 16-point advantage at 64-48 with 3:12 remaining in the game. During that stretch, the Lady Bears would force seven Delaware State turnovers.

Delaware State (3-24, 2-12 MEAC) would end Morgan's run with two free throws by Lanayjha Ashe at the 2:45 mark and Aliah Stinnett hit a jumper with 2:25 left for the Hornets' final points of the game and make it a 64-52 contest.

The Lady Bears would close out the game scoring the last seven points, including a layup by Mitchell with 36 seconds left for the final points of the game, giving Morgan State its largest lead of the evening (19 points) at 71-52.

The Lady Hornets were led by NaJai Pollard, who scored a team-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and added seven rebounds before fouling out. Mikah Aldridge came off the bench to score 10 points.

Morgan State outscored the Lady Hornets, 12-4 in fast break points for the game. All 12 of Morgan State's fast break points came in the fourth quarter. The guests also held a 36-22 advantage in points in the paint.

The visitors shot 21-of-55 (38 percent) from the floor and knocked down 26-of-32 (81 percent) from the free throw line. Delaware State finished the game shooting 32 percent (17-of-53) and was 16-of-25 (64 percent) from the charity line.

The Lady Bears return to Hill Field House on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they welcome the Hampton Lady Pirates. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. This will be the only regular season meeting between the two teams.
