KANSAS CITY, Mo., (Nov. 25, 2016)-Braennan Farrar scored a team-high 15 points and fellow Missouri native, Tayler Miller came off the bench to add 11 points, but it wasn't enough, as the Lady Bears fell to Eastern Kentucky, 66-58 on the opening day of the Plaza Lights Classic, hosted by the University of Missouri Kansas City on Friday. It was the first meeting between the two teams.
Eastern Kentucky improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Lady Bears fall to 1-3. The Colonels will now face Western Michigan on Saturday for the tournament title. Western Michigan defeated host UMKC earlier in the day, 66-54. Morgan State will take on UMKC in the third-place game at 3:30 p.m. at the Swinney Recreation Center.
Morgan State trailed 47-46 heading into the fourth quarter and the Colonels went on a 7-0 run in nearly four minutes to extend their lead to 54-46 with 6:05 remaining in the contest.
The Lady Bears finally got their first basket of the quarter on a three-pointer by Tayler Miller at the 4:59 mark and Braennan Farrar followed with a layup to cut the deficit to 54-51 with 3:57 left.
After Eastern Kentucky's Jalen O'Bannon knocked down a free three to increase the lead to 55-51, Jihayah Chavis knocked down both of her free throw attempts to bring the Lady Bears within two points (55-53) with 2:49 left. Unfortunately, that would be as close as Morgan State would get.
EKU would score the next five points to up its lead to 60-53. Miller ended the run with a three-pointer with 1:34 left to make it a 60-56 game. The Colonels would close out the contest scoring six of the final eight points for the win.
The Colonels outscored Morgan State, 26-12 in the paint and held a 20-14 advantage in points off turnovers. The Lady Bears did hold a 20-3 advantage in second chance points. EKU shot 18-of-26 (69.2 percent) from the free throw line, while Morgan State was 11-of-13 (84.6 percent).
EKU was led by O'Bannon, who finished with a game-high 17 points, while Alexus Cooper added 16 points. Madison Wood finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.
