Student-Athlete Spotlight: Chelsea Mitchell, Women's Basketball

Morgan State women's basketball player Chelsea Mitchell will look to flourish in her second season with the Lady Bears under the new guidance of interim head coach Ed Davis.

A native of Laurel, Md., Mitchell started in six of the 28 games she played last season. She tallied 3.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals, while averaging 17 minutes per contest. Mitchell grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points and two steals against Maryland Eastern Shore (3/3/16). She tied a career-best 10 points, while also setting a career-high four steals against Delaware State (1/9).

The Lady Bears open up the 2016-17 season on the road at Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 14 in Emmitsburg, Md. Morgan State's home opener will be on Nov. 17 against Washington Adventist. The first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest will be on Jan. 2 at home against Norfolk State.

Student Life:
What is the best time of the year on campus?
"Homecoming week."
Why did you choose MSU? "I grew up in a diverse county and I always wanted to get the HBCU experience. I was also interested in assisting the women's basketball team seek an NCAA tournament appearance."
What is your major and why? "Business administration and a minor in accounting. I wanted to chose a broad major that would also allow me to stay around athletics."
Favorite Professor and why? "Professor Berliner is my favorite because he always gave great life advice and advice on working hard."
If you had to give an incoming student advice, what would it be? "Make sure to keep your priorities straight and to focus on school, but have fun while doing it. Four years go by quick."
Describe your first day as a student at Morgan. "I was nervous, but the campus was always full of smiles and laughter -- it made me feel comfortable and welcomed wherever I went."
What do you like most about Morgan? "The outgoing people that fill the population of the school."

Would you rather read the book or watch the movie?  "Watch the movie. I'd rather see the visual aspect of the movie. I can understand it more."

What is your favorite part about your sport? "Creating chemistry and having fun while playing."
If you could play another position, what would it be and why? "The 4 spot (power forward), so that i can get big and post people up."
What is your favorite athletic memory? "Scoring 32 points in a high school game."
Favorite pro sports team? "Arizona Cardinals"
What is your top skill? "Shooting"
When did you start playing basketball? "In the 8th grade."

Would you rather be rich or famous and why? "I would rather be famous because money is not everything. I would only prefer to be famous if I was famous for doing something good."
If you could do one thing over, what would it be? "Playing high school basketball."
When you are not at practice, what could someone find you doing? "In the library in the books or in the gym working out."
If could play another sport, what would it be? "Track"
What do you look forward to doing during the summer?  "Spending time with family and preparing for pre-season."
If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower?  "Super speed, so that i can wake up at 9:55 a.m. and still make it to my 10:00 a.m. on time."

What is one thing people don't know about you? "I played tackle football, volleyball and ran track when I was younger."
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? "Focus on the promise not the process."
If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be? "The 1997 NBA Finals when Michael Jordan had the flu and still won the game for the Chicago Bulls."
If I could change one thing about myself, it would be…  "I would not change anything."
What are your goals in life? "To be happy and make other people around me happy."

Coolest thing you did this summer? "Met Lil Uzi backstage at a concert I worked."
