Student-Athlete Spotlight: Phillip Carr, Men's Basketball

Morgan State men's basketball player Phillip Carr will look to lead the Bears in his second season under the guidance of Bears head coach Todd Bozeman. 

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Carr started in 30 of the 31 games he played last season. He averaged 10.5 points and led the team in rebounds (6.9) and blocked shots (35), while averaging 30 minutes per contest.  The versatile 6-foot-8 forward scored in double-figures 15 times and recorded six games with double-digit rebounding. He scored a season-high 21 points (3-6 3FG) with nine rebounds against Hampton (Feb. 15), had 20 points at CSUN (Jan. 2), and posted four blocked shots against Goldey-Beacom (Nov. 23) and UMES (Jan. 11).

The Bears open up the 2016-17 season on the road at the University of Houston on Nov. 11 at Hofheinz Pavilion. Morgan State's home opener will be on Nov. 15 against Towson. The first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest will be on Jan. 4 at home against Norfolk State.

What is the best time of the year on campus? The first two weeks of school.
Why did you choose MSU? It's close to home and seemed like a good fit for me.
What is your major and why? Communications Multi Platform Production Major, because I want to be a sports analyst/ journalist.
If you had to give an incoming student advice, what would it be? Be You!! Don't fall victim to peer pressure.
Describe your first day as a student at Morgan. It was a real sunny day and a lot of people kept asking me how tall I am, and if I play on the basketball team. They were also asking where am I am from and what's my name.
What do you like most about Morgan? Fried Chicken Wednesday
What would you like to change at Morgan State? Change the rules in the refac (cafeteria) and give unlimited visitation.

Pop Culture:
What social media do you prefer the most? I like Facebook, SnapChat and Instagram -- all the same amount.
Would you rather read the book or watch the movie?  Watch the movie. I'm not really a reader for enjoyment.
What song can you not help but sing-a-long to? Chief Keef - "I Know"
Who is your celebrity crush? Paige Hurd
Favorite TV Show? Family Guy
Favorite Movie? Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Favorite Celebrity? Floyd Mayweather
Favorite musician/musical group? Drake
My favorite cartoon or children's show as a child was… The Boondocks
If you could switch lives with any celebrity, who would it be and why? Floyd Mayweather. He's very successful and worked hard for what he has. His ambition and focus is what keeps him where he is.
Favorite music genre? Rap

Travel:
Most interesting place you've visited? Williston, North Dakota
Place you would like to visit? I would like to visit Italy. Experience new culture and food.

Food:
Favorite home cooked meal? "Steak and Potatoes

Most underrated food that you like? BBQ chicken pizza from Dominos
I hated it when my mom made me eat? Any food with onions, peppers, pickles, Tartar  sauce

Sports:
When is your favorite time of your sports season?  Game time
Who is your favorite athlete? Kevin Durant. He's a hard worker and a good person on and off the court.
Who do you model your game after? Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant
Which team do you most look forward to competing against? Any team that's a high major and is supposed to beat us.
Do you have any pre-game/match superstitions or rituals? Wear my elite socks on the opposite foot, and listen to a song that gets me hyped and I listen to it before every game.
What is your favorite part about your sport? I don't know. Basketball is just too lit.
What is your favorite athletic memory? Going D1
Favorite pro sports team? Boston Celtics
What is your top skill? Rebounding
When did you start playing basketball? Junior High School

Miscellaneous:
Would you rather be rich or famous and why? Rich, because fame is too much. I like to live low and maintain.
If you could do one thing over, what would it be? I don't have any regrets.
When you are not at practice, what could someone find you doing? Eating, in the gym or just laying down.
If could play another sport, what would it be? Football
What do you look forward to doing during the summer?  Summer nights and enjoying Brooklyn.  
If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower? Teleport. I'd be able to go whereever I want in just a matter of seconds.
Do you have an interesting nickname? Nope
What is one thing people don't know about you? I didn't make a school basketball team until my senior year in high school.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Be you!!!
If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be? What it was like living in the 1980s and 90s.
What are your goals in life? To play in the NBA
Person you admire the most? My Aunt
Coolest thing you did this summer? Went to Canada with my teammates.
Most prized possession? My life. I'm blessed to be able to wake up everyday and continue to strive for success.
If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Lauren London, Meagan Good and Paige Hurd.
Dream event? Winning an NCAA title
Your hometown is known for? Good music artists... But Brooklyn really speaks for itself.
