Lady Bears Let Their Play Do The Talking In Friday’s Sweep Of Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 14, 2016)-Natashia Barker tallied a match-high 17 kills and added 12 digs to lead Morgan State to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21) sweep of crosstown rival Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division contest on Friday night at Hill Field House.

With the win, Morgan State (4-16, 4-2 MEAC) closed out the first half of the conference slate on a two-match winning streak, while remaining in third-place in the league standings. The Lady Bears also improved to 60-10 all-time against Coppin State. It was the first sweep in the series, since Coppin State swept the Lady Bears on Sept. 23, 2012 at Hill Field House.

Barker, who notched her first double-double of the season, also recorded a match-high .452 hitting percentage with just three errors on 31 attempts. Haley McClure fell shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 digs and nine kills, while Keana Browne also added nine kills. Jasmine Hubbard tied a season-best with 19 digs and Roi Wallace totaled a match-high 39 assists.

Morgan State would post a hitting percentage of .225, finishing with 45 kills. Coppin State concluded the match with 25 kills for a hitting percentage of .076.

The Eagles (1-19, 1-5 MEAC) were led by Jasmine Lougheed, who had six kills, while Guro Froberg had five. Dominique Madarang finished with 15 assists and Glorines Rosado recorded a match-high 21 digs.

Led by Browne and Wallace, who each tallied three blocks, Morgan State would hold a 5.0-3.0 blocking advantage over Coppin State.

The Lady Bears will now close out their non-conference schedule on Sunday, Oct. 16, when they welcome MEAC Southern Division foe, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats to Hill Field House. The contest will be a rematch of last season's MEAC semifinal match and will be the first regular season meeting between the two teams since 2012. First serve for Sunday's match is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Wildcats dropped a 3-1 decision at Howard on Friday evening in Washington, D.C.
