Lady Bears Rebound From First Home Loss With Rout of Winston-Salem State, 73-44

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 13, 2010)-Playing in their final non-conference game of the season, the Morgan State Lady Bears defeated visiting Winston-Salem State (WSSU), 73-44 on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House. The game also marked the final meeting between the two schools on the Division I level, as WSSU will make the move back to the Division II level at the end of the season.

Corin Adams scored a game-high 24 points, while DeKeisha Mathis came off the bench and added a career-high 10 points for the Lady Bears, who improved to 5-1 this season at home. Adams also tallied five assists and four steals, both game-highs.

Morgan State jumped out to an early 11-4 advantage, following two free throws by Aaries Reed.  

Winston-Salem's MaLisa Bumpus scored 11 of the Lady Rams next 14 points, including eight straight and three three-pointers to even the game at 18 all with 11:26 left in the opening half. Morgan State then closed out the half scoring 12 straight points in part of a 14-2 run, capped off with Adam's block on Taneisha White, resulting in a fastbreak layup by Adams to give the hosts a 32-20 halftime lead.

The Lady Bears (12-11) had built a 45-28 lead, before the guests scored eight straight to pull within 45-36 after two free throws by White with 15:48 to play. Morgan State quickly extended its lead by scoring 11 of the next 13 points to take a 56-38 lead. The Lady Bears then closed out the game with an 18-6 spurt, capped off by five straight points from Abby Diagne, followed by four straight by Phylicia Jones for the game's final score.

Morgan State finished the game shooting 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field. Marking the first time this season they have shot 50 percent in a game.

Bumpus led the Lady Rams (2-22) with 13 points, while Rene Rector pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.  

Morgan State returns to action on Monday, Feb. 15, when it plays host to South Carolina State in a MEAC contest at Hill Field House. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
