Morgan State 70, Norfolk State 55
NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 31, 2010)-A day after a snowstorm hit the Tidewater area and postponed Saturday's scheduled game, Morgan State and Norfolk State finally took the court for a rare Sunday afternoon Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest at Echols Hall.
Corin Adams scored a team-high 19 points and Georgien Williams added nine, as Morgan State earned a 70-55 MEAC victory over Norfolk State.
Morgan State (10-9, 6-1 MEAC) extended its season-long winning streak to five games with the win, while increasing its winning streak over Norfolk State to six straight.
Genor Dalton led the host Spartans with a game-high 20 points, while Tiora Hackley added 11 points. Batavia Owens hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds for Norfolk State, which has lost two straight and eight of its last nine games.
Morgan State scored the game's first nine points, then used a 9-2 run to take a 23-8 advantage with 11:07 left in the opening half, following three straight three-pointers.
Norfolk State (3-13, 0-7 MEAC), however went on a 20-8 run capped off by back-to-back baskets by Dalton to bring the Spartans within 28-31 with 1:33 left in the half. Morgan State, which never trailed in the game would take a 35-29 lead at the break.
The Lady Bears began the second half scoring six straight points and then used a 14-2 spurt to extend their lead to 55-36 after Williams completed a three-point play at the 9:37 mark. Morgan's lead would grow as high as 21 points (62-41), following a free throw by Aaries Reed (five points) with 5:29 remaining in the game.
Morgan State, which is off to its best MEAC start ever at 6-1, will visit defending league champion, North Carolina A&T on Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the Corbett Sports Center. A&T defeated Coppin State on Sunday, 79-56.
