BALTIMORE, Md. -- Morgan State captured the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's top postseason defensive honor announced Monday.
The Bears' senior linebacker Jarrell Guyton was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year. Guyton leads a list of seven (7) Bear members selected as the MEAC announced its All-Conference First and Second Teams, matching the most All-MEAC selections they have had since 1979. The MEAC's head coaches and sports information directors made the selections.
Guyton joins the Bears' Eugene Simms, who won the award in 1973, and James Dozier, who won the award in 1990.
It marked the third time MSU head coach Donald Hill-Eley has had a MEAC Player of the Year selection, and it marked his first Defensive Player of the Year.
“It's definitely an honor for the young man who has worked hard ever since joining our program and has really done a good for us,” said coach Hill. “He's a tremendous young man and it's good to see our University prepare him to achieve such an honor. ”
Guyton, one of Hill's first recruits from Miami, was one of the premier linebackers in the nation. The 6-0, 225 pounder led one of the most dominating defensive units in the FCS. For the second year in a row the Morgan State Bears led the FCS in total defense giving up less than 213.4 yards per game.
Guyton collected 35 solo and 35 unassisted tackles for the Bears this season. He put up numbers in almost every defensive statistical category including 70 total tackles, 13 tackles for a loss of 41 yards, four sacks for a 22 yard loss, one interception for a 22 yards return, three broken up passes, one hurry, and one forced and recovered fumble.
The All-MEAC 1st Team selections included RB Devan James, OL Dwayne Delaney, DL Justin Lawrence, LB Jarrell Guyton, SS Chris Williams, and CB Darren McKhan, while OL Robert Norris was selected to the All-MEAC 2nd team.
