The 2004 edition of Morgan State University softball will step on the diamond for the first time this weekend to participate in a tournament in Hampton Roads, VA.
The Lady Bears will be part of a tournament field that includes several Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schools. The tournament should give 1st year Head Coach jeff Bozier a strong indication of where his squad is in comparision to some of the MEAC competition.
This could be an intersting season, as the Lady Bears look to win the MEAC North and make a run toward a MEAC Tournament Championship.
BEHIND THE PLATE
The Lady Bears will be solid at catcher in 2004. Morgan State is proud to welcome back senior Aubrey Love for her final season in the “Blue & Orange”. ‘Bre is unquestionably one of the best catchers in the MEAC. She is the complete package. Ms. Love is a leader who knows the game. She has a strong and accurate throwing arm and has uncanny instincts around the plate. She also knows what to do with the bat in her hands. She led the team in hitting in ‘03 with a .322 average, and struck out a team low four time last season. A smart hitter, Aubrey almost never swings at a bad pitch and is blessed with good power to all fields.
IN THE CIRCLE
Morgan State returns one of the best pitchers in the history of the program. Grace Glenn is the Lady Bear’s all-time leader in strikeouts (338), no hitters (2), and is 2nd on the all-time list in wins (36). Ms. Glenn has a variety of pitches in the arsenal, and great command in the circle. She is an all-around player who has a good bat and tremendous fielding instincts. Morgan State will need a big senior season from Grace Glenn.
THE INFIELDERS/UTILITY
The infield at MSU is solid. The Lady Bears are pleased to welcome back junior Melinda Coffee. The St. Paul, MN native has improved tremendously each season, and is looking for even bigger and better things this year. Ms. Coffee has a good glove and can generate some power with the bat. Her attitude, and work ethic are second to none. Melinda will be a big part of the Lady Bear story in 2003. MSU will also be looking for leadership from Aloise Shepherd. The Ft. Smith, Arkansas product has a powerful stick, and is capable of making some big things happen with every swing of the bat. She also gave the Lady Bears a big boost on the pitching mound last season. A big year from “Weezie” should mean big things for Lady Bear softball. MSU senior Villa Fiddler missed the entire 2003 season due to injury. The Lady Bears are happy to have her experience back on the field in ‘04. The New Jersey native is a solid hitter with good power, and should be able to give the Lady Bears a lift in ’04.
THE OUTFIELDERS
The Morgan State University outfield is blessed to have the services of junior Tiesha Bumpers. Ms. Bumpers is a able to cover lots of ground in the outfield and has extremely good tracking skills. She has a good arm, and was a big presence in centerfield last season. MSU also returns a young lady who has the ability to shine in both the infield and the outfield. Veronica Brown has great athletic ability and versatility. She has tremendous arm strength and good range. This young lady has a quick bat and can get down the base path in a hurry. She was the leadoff hitter for much of last season, and her ability to jump start the offense will be very important to the Lady Bears cause in 2004. Another big weapon back for another season is Shena Gunnell-Clark. Ms. Clark held down left field for the Lady Bears last season and could help MSU in both the outfield and infield this year. Shena has lots of potential at the plate, and will be looking for more consistency at the dish in ‘04. Morgan State also welcomes back Erin Crawford, a Cheverly, MD native. Ms. Crawford showed continued improvement throughout the 2003 season both defensively and at the plate. As her game continues to evolve Erin should become more and more instrumental in the continued growth of Lady Bear softball. Marissa McKinney is also back for the ‘04 season. She is one of the fastest players on the team and adds a great deal of depth to the Lady Bear roster. She was often called on to pinch run in ‘03, and should again be a big part of MSU’s run scoring punch this season.
THE NEWCOMERSThe new crew in 2004 is deep, talented and versatile. Morgan State is excited about a strong incoming recruiting class that should prove to be the foundation for the future of the program. Among the newcomers is Keyana Smith, a pitcher/infielder from Rancho Cordova, California. Ms. Smith is a junior who will be bringing lots of experience to the Lady Bear roster. She is a gifted all-around player who could bring some immediate help to MSU softball.
Another gifted newcomer is Nastosha Johnson, who hails from Aberdeen, MD. Ms. Johnson will add to the Lady Bears depth behind the plate. She is a talented catcher who will give the Lady Bears some solid catching options for 2004 and beyond.
Another new face on the diamond is LeeAnn Vertefeuille, a talented outfielder from Chaplin, CT. LeeAnn should help improve the depth and speed of the Morgan State outfield. She has the ability to make both an immediate and long term contribution to MSU softball. Additionally, the outfield may get another big boost from a talented young lady from Jonesboro, GA. Alicia Smith is a freshman who brings a combination of impressive skills to the roster. She is a young lady who also is capable of making a quick impact.
The 2004 edition of Lady Bear softball has the potential to do some serious damage this season. However, they are going to have to work hard to get it done. The MEAC is improving each season, and the Lady Bears will have to be a more consistent squad if they want to make strides in ‘04.
