Stephens Named to CFPA Honorable Mention of Week 3

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Morgan State junior Allen Stephens was selected as the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Honorable Mention of Week Three.
 
The junior linebacker from South Boston, Va., made a huge impact in the Bears' first win of the season as he tallied eight tackles, four solo, with four tackles for a loss of 31 yards. Stephens also registered a sack and was a key to MSU's best defensive effort of the season, limiting the Robert Morris Colonials to 88 yards on the ground.
 
Stephens (6-2, 250) was selected to the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason team, and additionally he was a preseason watch list selection for the FCS Linebacker of the Year Award given by the CFPA.
 
He was one of 41 FCS linebackers on the preseason list by the CFPA, which gives out weekly and yearly positional awards based on objective, scientific ratings of the extent to which players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
 
Stephens completed the 2010 season for the Bears with 65 total tackles, including 11.5 for losses and 3 sacks. He also had two quarterback hurries, in addition to a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Already being mentioned in the same breath as recent MSU standout linebackers Albert Gamble, Vincent Brown and Jerrell Guyton, he will continue to be a player to watch this fall.
 
Stephens and the Bears return to work on Saturday when they take of the Howard Bison in their MEAC-opener at the Whitney Young Classic in East Rutherford, N.J. The game will kick-off at 3:30 p.m. at MetLife Stadium and will be televised by ESPNU. The game will also be carried live by WEAA 88.9FM.
