Volleyball Drops Opener to Rhode Island, 3-0

HAMDEN, Conn. (Aug. 29, 2008)-The Morgan State volleyball team opened up the 2008 season at the Quinnipiac Invitational and dropped its opening match of the tournament to Rhode Island, 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-18) on Friday afternoon at Burt Kahn Court.

Lauren McIntosh and Caitlin Welsh of Rhode Island each tallied a match-high eight kills and Lindsay Lytle finished with 21 assists to lead the Rams to victory.

Morgan State was led by Erica Turnbull's team-high five kills and Kierra Riley added four. Christa Rogers had 13 assists, while fellow freshman Delissa Carline had 12 digs.

The Lady Bears (0-1) finished the match with 17 kills on 99 attempts for a hitting percentage of -.081, while committing 25 attack errors, including a game-high 12 errors during the third and final game. Morgan State also totaled 12 service aces for the match.

The Rams (1-0), which had a hitting percentage of .205 with 30 kills on 83 attempts, held a 44-34 advantage in digs with Peggy Doino and Welsh collecting 14 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Lady Bears will close out the opening day of competition with a non-conference match against host Quinnipiac at 7:30 p.m. The host Bobcats lost earlier to Fordham in five games.
